Understanding The Causes
Before you can start to address the issue, you have to understand the issue. There are many different medical reasons why seniors can have balance issues, including medicinal interactions, low blood pressure, stroke, upper respiratory or bacterial infections, and inner ear infections. If you notice that your loved one is struggling with balance issues, it is a good idea to discuss that with a primary care physician.
Tip #1 – Physical Therapy
After you find the cause of your loved one’s balance issues, it may be possible for a physical therapist to recommend a number of different exercises. These will focus on endurance, strength, stability, and flexibility. By making seniors more stable on their feet, it reduces the chance of a fall.
Tip #2 – Invest In Proper Support
Do you find that your loved one has a hard time moving even small distances? Perhaps the types of shoe they wear could be the issue. It might be beneficial to invest in support such as implementing handrails near stairs or areas without proper lighting, cane or walker for stability, and orthopedic shoes with Velcro.
Tip #3 – Make It Open For Discussion
Oftentimes we do not discuss the concern we have for our loved one’s health – but they could share our concerns. This is why it is important to make this an open discussion and take their suggestions into account as well. Perhaps they have their own ideas on how to deal with the balance issues.
Tip #4 – Remove Potential Hazards
When was the last time that you looked in the assisted living facility or home that your loved one lives? Perhaps the room is cluttered, perhaps there are items left on the floor that could cause a stumble. By removing these hazards, you are making their environment much safer. It is a good idea to remove any type of floor covering or unnecessary tables that may cause a fall. By making sure that cords are out of the way and you have non-slip shower mats installed, you are making sure that falls are prevented as much as possible.
